Poem 1.

Grandma on the Moon
By Joji Varghese Kuncheria

Man landed on the moon is mere fantasy,
A tall-tale story told by the lunatic idiots,
Responded angrily my great grandma,
Who had seen over a thousand full moons.

She could hardly take the breaking news,
That stormed the world in my school-days.
As I tried to explain this historic event,
She opened her store house of moon-myths.

She explained to me how the moon affects,
The planet earth and its human inhabitants,
How the high and low tides occur in the sea,
How moon's cycle affects human fertility.

The lunar cycle, she has thus explained,
Is similar to the woman's monthly cycle,
And why an apothecary (her term for doctor),
Refused to do her surgery on a full moon day.

She evoked my curiosity sky-high to search,
Mythological lunar deities like the Chandra-
Of the Hindus, Artemis of the Greeks and-
Diana of the Romans, still haunting many.

The great ancient cultures of the Hindus,
Buddhists, Chinese, Jews and Muslims,
Based the lunar calendar on the New Moon,
Modern astrology, on the Lunation Cycle.

Full Moon nights induce increased activity
Of the subconscious mind as is established,
That I have decided to complete this poem,
On a day like this - the Hunter's Moon day.

The Blood Moon is a sign of the end times,
As believed by many Christians, to happen-
Before the great and terrible Day of the Lord,
And before the triumphant Second Coming.

Author's note:

  • "The Day of the Lord" is a biblical term and theme used in both the Hebrew Bible (יֹום יְהוָה) and the New Testament (μέρα κυρίου), as in "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the mooninto blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come" (Joel 2:31, cited in Acts 2:20).

  • The Second Coming (sometimes called the Second Advent or the Parousia) is a Christian and Islamic belief regarding the future (or past) return of Jesus after his ascension to heaven about two thousand years ago.

  • In the Quran, the second coming of Jesus is heralded in Az-Zukhruf (the Quran's 43rd surah or chapter) as a sign of the Day of Judgment.

  • October's full moon is known as the Hunter's Moon, though it has many other nicknames.

Poem 2.

An Ode to the Moon
Joji Varghese Kuncheria
Oh, heavenly beauty high on above!
Many have gone crazy at your look,
An eternal feast to many a naked eye,
In spender and majesty you dwell above.
Why do you hide your back always?
Reveal your real and true personality.
Turn around and show us the other side,
We on Earth who are here to admire.
You are like us, showing off your best,
Personality that you only want to display,
Hiding behind a mask all erroneousness,
From all of us who are so judgemental.
There is none, your beauty hasn't moved,
Evoking a silent song in many hearts.
You have turned many a poets to sing,
Your everlasting beauty to the world.

The starry nights galore in its majesty,
But you marvel all their twinkling beauty,
And always at your best on a full moon,
Many await and long to see you in full.
Beware of the envious clouds- dark and rude,
Trying to overwhelm your beauty at times,
But out you come victorious after a while,
Showing forth again to the anxious hearts.
The nightingale of the night that you are,
Singing a silent hymn, soothing to all,
Bringing solace to many a broken heart,
A balm of Gilead to many an ailing soul.
