Save Ourselves to Save the World
By Joji Varghese Kuncheria

Are we heading for the inevitable Doomsday?
Can any good come out of a decayed society?
The innocent blood shed on Earth calls all out,
For revenge as if there's life in the shed blood.

The root of all human evil is mere selfishness,
Which is rampant everywhere on planet Earth,
Gone are the times when people were selfless,
These are the days that we have become selfies.

The world knows and speaks only one language,
The language of money and how to make more.
Like a snake charmer it controls the meek world,
Many are out to make money by hook or crook.

A lot of hue and cry is now about climate change,
The problem to address is lack of basic values,
To learn to be good citizens with human values,
Of empathy, love, compassion and brotherhood.

Parents do not raise the children with such values,
Basic inherent values of truth, loyalty and honesty-
The fundamental goodness of people and society,
But they see the injustice and robberies by rulers.

Throwing all scruples to the swirling whirl wind,
We've become silent destroyers of our eco system,
By cutting of trees, drilling, mining and poaching,
And unrealistically talking about Planetary Doom.

The planet is not in trouble but the inhabitants-
Who are busy in proliferating and polluting, are.
It is not the human life on Earth that's in danger,
But some ideas that we so dearly hold on to, are.

The worldly illusion of eternal economic growth,
Building a world in cleverness rather than virtue,
Nations who think their rules are more important-
Than planetary rules, are a real threat to humanity.

Be far from our selfishness, greed and arrogance,
Change our mind-set, the world we have created,
Keep the integrity of nature, and talk not of profit,
Control or growth but of solar energy and recycling.
