My Home is in the City of Ruins
By Joji Varghese Kuncheria

My home is in a city of ruins,
It is a heap of ashes now;
All became a rubble in no time,
Molten as wax before the fire.

What's the transgression of my people?
Whose sin has made us run for life?
I can only wail and mourn for my city,
There's no escape from evil and inequity.

We are orphans in an alien land,
Forced to embrace an alien life,
So alien, but so majestic and serene,
Still I wail and mourn for my land.

Don't call me an outcast, a refugee!
I do have a right to live in peace,
You protect an endangered animal,
Am I not worth more than an animal?

Am I not an endangered human?
Who is created in His own image,
Do not deny my right to exist,
The planet earth is for all to share.

We all are aliens and pilgrims here,
Our days on earth are as shadows,
Let wisdom prevail over malice,
Let mercy triumph over judgment.
Let me live! Let mercy prevail!
